Drew Nugent is a jazz musician and composer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His primary instruments are piano, trumpet, voice, and believe it or not, the tea kettle! Nugent and the band specialize in playing in the traditional "hot" jazz style of the 1920s but also encompass New Orlean Barrelhouse, Second Line, 1930s and 40s, and Gypsy Jazz. Listening to them is not simply a concert, but a walk back in time. A living history of sorts. The band, known as the Midnight Society, is regarded as one of the best in the business, and has been together over 10 years. Under Drew's leadership, they bring forth an authentic, yet original approach to an art form over100 years old. Nugent's inspiration comes from a who's who list of great performers, composers, and musicians, both obscure and known going back a full century.
Although a lot of this music may seem forgotten in many circles, it is alive and well with Drew Nugent and the Midnight Society

Drew Nugent: Hot Jazz Meets Vaudeville
"The success of [Drew's] themed events hasn’t escaped Drew’s notice. He recently recruited friends Adam Iezzi and Buddy Schreerer to help him with creating some of his own. The weekend of August 11th he has arranged a Jazz on the Strazz event in conjunction with a historic short line railroad. He hosts a monthly swing dance event on Philadelphia’s Olde City, a burlesque show called the “Blind Tiger Speakeasy” complete with a secret password you must acquire by word of mouth, and a variety show called “Nugent’s Follies” held in the Trocadero, a historic Vaudeville theater on the edge of Philadelphia’s Chinatown."
Drew Nugent: Hot Jazz Meets Vaudeville (Syncopated Times)
"[The Midnight Society] has been reviving and shaping the traditional music scene in Philadelphia for almost a decade...[Drew's] endeavors clearly shows this approach has opened up a variety of opportunities for him to reach new audiences. His success has helped to make hot jazz and ragtime part of the creative culture in Philly...The revival of Vaudevillian and Burlesque culture as venues for hot jazz in Philly, and elsewhere, provides a welcome context for the music. Putting it back into the settings it arose from with the hope that everyone will have a good time. At only 32 Drew Nugent already has a lot to teach others about doing it right."
